The Race

Track temperature is touching 50c. Juan Pablo Montoya has a couple of replacement parts fitted after his car hit a BAR generator, when taking up his grid position. He starts as planned.

Lap 1

An incident-packed start to the race. Michael Schumacher starts well, as does Kimi Raikkonen, who goes clear of Jarno Trulli, who looks to have damaged his diffuser. Rubens Barrichello goes into the back of Trulli, and is forced to make an early pit stop for a new wing. Fernando Alonso goes to the pits on the first lap to repair a damaged wing, and rejoins in 17th place. Christian Klien rolls off at the first corner, and David Coulthard also goes off after running over Alonso's front wing debris.

Lap 3

Michael Schumacher leads Kimi Raikkonen by nearly a second.

Lap 5

Michael Schumacher leads Kimi Raikkonen by nearly a second, but more important for the Finn is that world championship leader Fernando Alonso is back in 17th place.

Lap 9

Championship leader Fernando Alonso is still in 17th place after his early enforced pit stop. Overtaking opportunities are limited, the first eight drivers remain unchanged.

Lap 11

Kimi Raikkonen pits at the end of lap 11, crucially getting in his first pit-stop ahead of Michael Schumacher. He returns to the race in fifth place behind Ralf Schumacher.

Lap 13

Jarno Trulli pits for fuel and rejoins just ahead of Takuma Sato. Michael Schumacher's lead goes up to nearly 10 seconds.

Lap 15

Michael Schumacher pits for a fuel top-up and minor adjustment, rejoining in second. Ralf Schumacher also pits.

Lap 16

Juan Pablo Montoya leads Michael Schumacher by over 16 seconds, with Kimi Raikkonen in third. Fernando Alonso is still struggling after his early problems, in 14th place.

Lap 19

Juan Pablo Montoya's lead goes up to 18 seconds, with no significant changes in the places behind, or outside the top 10, where Fernando Alonso is still 14th.

Lap 23

Race leader Juan Pablo Montoya pits and returns to the race in third place behind Michael Schumacher and Kimi Raikkonen.

Lap 25

Michael Schumacher continues to hold a narrow lead over Kimi Raikkonen. Further back, Rubens Barrichello runs wide but championship leader Fernando Alonso fails to take advantage and work his way up through the back-markers.

Lap 27

Championship leader Fernando Alonso makes a pit stop. Kimi Raikkonen is keeping the pressure on race leader Michael Schumacher, but third placed Juan Pablo Montoya falls over seven seconds off the pace. At the back of the field, Minardi's Robert Doornbos withdraws from the race with hydraulic problems.

Lap 31

Kimi Raikkonen stays less than a second behind leader Michael Schumacher.

Lap 33

Rubens Barrichello pits from 10th place, rejoining in 12th place.

Lap 34

Ralf Schumacher pits from 4th, rejoining in same place.

Lap 35

Kimi Raikkonen surges into the lead as Michael Schumacher pits.

Lap 36

Kimi Raikkonen pits following Michael Schumacher's stop and returns to the race ahead of Schumacher, while Juan Pablo Montoya takes the lead. Alonso still in 12th place.

Lap 40

Leader Juan Pablo Montoya loses pace for no apparent reason, allowing team-mate Kimi Raikkonen to take the lead. He pits and retires, having suffered a drive shaft problem.

Lap 43

Kimi Raikkonen's lead over Michael Schumacher has grown to over 20 seconds. Eighth placed Giancarlo Fisichella slides off into the gravel, allowing Mark Webber to overtake him.

Lap 44

Felipe Massa is forced into the pits with smoke coming from his car, but returns after a spare part is replaced.

Lap 47

Jenson Button and leader Kimi Raikkonen both pit. Raikkonen returns to the race ahead of Michael Schumacher and retains a lead of more than five seconds. Alonso in 11th place.

Lap 50

Kimi Raikkonen stays in the lead, over six seconds ahead of Schumacher. Alonso remains in 11th place. Takuma Sato pits from eighth place, allowing Giancarlo Fisichella back into the top eight, but the Italian soon pits, so they swap places again.

Lap 54

Ralf Schumacher pits from third but holds on to his position, with fifth placed Nick Heidfeld also pitting and returning just behind Jenson Button but ahead of Mark Webber, who has yet to make his second stop.

Lap 58

Kimi Raikkonen lead over Schumacher is now over 30 seconds, as Jacques Villeneueve ends up on the grass retires.

Lap 59

The race for second place hots up as Ralf Schumacher closes the gap on Michael, lapping 7 seconds faster than his brother.

Lap 61

1o laps to go, Kimi Raikkonen remains over half a minute ahead of Michael Schumacher, with Ralf Schumacher just over three seconds behind , in third place.

Lap 62

Raikkonen well ahead, Fernando Alonso still in 11th place.

Lap 66

The gap between the Schumacher brothers continues to shrink.

Lap 70

Kimi Raikkonen claims his fourth win of the season, coming home 35 seconds ahead of Michael Schumacher, with Ralf Schumacher in third, gaining his first podium place of the season.

Jarno Trulli finishes fourth, with Jenson Button fifth ahead of Williams duo Nick Heidfeld and Mark Webber, with Takuma Sato in eighth.
